“Project 3/3”

So I was supposed to do a blog post around the end of December on my second out of three projects (I think?) which would have been the Health and Wellness Week thing. But I’m calling this Project 3/3. Sorry Sanders I’m following my own rules on this post again. My third project is going to be a project that doesn’t get graded. A project that will not involve the class, the teacher, or the students. My project is to carry on what I have learned, and spread innovative techniques to anyone and everyone. My project is to mirror the kind of attitude many students in my class had – optimistic, hopeful, motivated, and supportive. My project is to encourage as many students as I can to be a part of Communications and Innovations. My project is to be kind. To be respectful. To not  take advantage of the time I have and the people I spend it with. To make people feel their worth. My project is to fix what I did. I want everyone else to try really hard in that class and make their teacher proud and themselves even prouder. So now I ask… What is your “project 3/3?”


“Blog #13 – Quickwrites” (TEDx Talk??)

This blog was due December 18. Yikes. Sorry Sanders, but I really feel like just speaking what’s on my mind right now rather than following a format. This post is going to be all over the place and probably a novel, but I’m just going to say it all right here, right now. So first I would like to talk about myself. I am a person who is generally happy. To most people, I do not come off that way. I think it’s because I either speak my mind or because I have an angry looking resting face (which I promise I don’t do on purpose). Coming into this class this semester, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I kind of assumed it would be like the Friday projects I had done the previous year in Sanders’ english class. I’m not going to lie or make excuses anymore. I didn’t take the class seriously. And it is only now, the night of the last day of having my Innovations and Communications class, that I am feeling deeply overwhelmed with feelings and thoughts about my lack of performance and participation in the class throughout the entire semester. I had the poorest attitude and I royally wasted not only my time, but my teacher’s and classmate’s. I abused the time I had in the class and spent little of it doing what I should have been doing. I truly don’t remember the last time I felt this guilty. I didn’t listen in class, I was, at times, outwardly disrespectful to my peers/teacher, and I didn’t make an effort to do what I was asked, when I was asked. I turned into a pessimistic, lazy student. I have absolutely no excuse for my actions (or lack thereof) in that class. All I can say at this point, is that I am so, so very sorry.

Now I just want to talk about my teacher for this class, Sanders. The first day of English class (junior year) I remember he had a happy song playing on his computer and had us introduce ourselves to the class by making objects that described us out of playdoh. Needless to say, from then on I had nothing but good feelings about how the class was going to go. Having Sanders for both classes was a blessing. I know he doesn’t think that’s how I felt/feel, but it is and always has been. He is honestly my favorite teacher I have ever had. You will never find someone who genuinely cares about the happiness and success of students as much as he does. No matter what class he is teaching, he is nothing but encouraging, welcoming, accepting, and helpful. Truly one of the most awesome people I have ever met. Of course I’m writing this in a blog because I’m super mellow and not the type to be all overly nice and blah blah whatever I don’t know what I’m saying. In class when we all pitch ideas, Sanders always shows excitement and makes it aware that he supports his students and cares about what they have to say. I have never in my life had a teacher who is as genuine and down to earth as him. All I can say at this point, is thank you so, so very much.

I’ll end this post with giving some advice to any students who will have the option of taking Communications and Innovations next school year (2016-2017). Take the class. Seriously, take it. I was a total bum in the class, but obviously it has changed me if I’m sitting here tonight finally having the urge to come on here and make up all of these blog posts that were due eternities ago. I regret not trying in that class so, so much. You have no idea. I completely took everything for granted, and now that I won’t be stepping in that classroom and seeing my favorite teacher and some of my favorite people each morning, I’m feeling very, very disappointed in myself and sad that it’s over. It’s honestly not even a class. It’s like just a place to go during the school day where you can express yourself, your thoughts and ideas, and do something that YOU want to do, while having the support of some really great people, the greatest being the teacher. I could have done so many amazing things in the class, and I didn’t. But I should have and I will always regret not trying. I will always remember the class. And maybe I didn’t do what I was supposed to do, but crazily enough, tonight I realized something that hit me like a train. I need to have faith. Faith in myself and faith in others. I need to make the time I have count. All my teacher did was work hard to uplift each of his students and push them to truly have faith in themselves. And I deliberately ignored his efforts. But I feel so moved right now. I want to do something great. I want to have more faith in myself and I want to have the burning passion and motivation to do something awesome to help others. I owe this realization to not just the class, but more importantly the teacher. I know the class is over, but I promise I am going to try to innovate in my own life. I am going to try to make my teacher and peers proud. If any administration for some reason sees this, please keep this class as an option for students at our school. We have the best teacher for the class. It helps students have so much more confidence and discover many self-realizations. I believe it’s a class that is necessary to keep a student’s mind healthy.

Overall, I’m really just sorry. I just want to thank my teacher for doing what he has and for working so hard to put together a class even though he didn’t know the outcome of it. And I sincerely hope that everyone considers taking Sanders class next school year. I promise you will not regret it. But please try. Try not only for the grade, for yourself, or to please your parents, but for me. Make people proud. Believe in yourself. Respect your teacher and classmates. And above all, be kind.

Meet Someone New

Alright. This blog post was due November 23. Being the disrespectful student I can be at times, I brushed this off. But tonight, I want nothing more than to talk about how I met someone new. That someone is a woman I watched give a TEDx Talk at a local coffee shop tonight. I won’t share her name just because I don’t want to share anything she might not be okay with. This woman, single mother of five, got on stage bare-faced and told the entire audience about how she feels broken. She is currently struggling with anorexia nervosa. As soon as she dropped the bomb, I had goosebumps. What courage that must take that little woman to get up and be 100% vulnerable and exposed in front of a room full of strangers. As the votes were being tallied at the end, I felt a strong inclination to go tell her how well she did. I told her she did really well and that I admired her ability to be so vulnerable. I guess technically I didn’t “meet” her, but I think it counts. It felt good to let someone who has had so much pain, feel proud of themselves for what they had accomplished.

“Blog #9”

Believe it or not, I actually have a lot to talk about tonight. So, I’m going to make it into several blog posts. So this post was actually due on November 13…. Nice job, Kelly. I don’t really expect that I’ll still actually get a grade for this, but I owe it to my teacher to do it regardless. At this point, I couldn’t tell you what I did this week in November, but I know what I did do, was not doing enough. I have so many incredibly mixed emotions tonight, and the first place I thought of expressing them was here. So enjoy… if anyone is even reading this.

Health & Wellness Week

So this past week Seth and I have cracked down on our Health & Wellness Week project. We finished our banner on Friday and decided that after each tidbit we announce, we will post it on the banner. Our goal is to keep our tidbits simple, interesting, and something all students/teachers can do. I’m really excited about this project because it’s something I am very passionate about and would love the opportunity to share with others. I have found through personal experience that leading a lifestyle in which you work every day to better yourself and your body is so empowering. I have never been more confident and happy with myself than I am right now. I want to show people that filling your body with foods mother nature has provided can make all the difference in the world when it comes to your energy, attitude, and overall happiness. I want to show people a solid work out can make you feel on top of the world – that almost all of your problems can be solved and your mind can be put at ease with just an hour of intense exercising. I hope by the end of this project I will have motivated someone to change their lifestyle for the better and gain more confidence in doing so.

Reflection Blog 11

Over the past couple of weeks I have decided to start a new project. While the whole project with ASL interested me, I felt like it was time to start something that I know I’m passionate about and I can stick to. So, I’m starting another Health & Wellness Project (I did one in Sanders class last school year). What we will start with to kick it off is Health & Wellness Week, which seemed to be fairly well liked when Seth and I did it last school year. We paint a banner to hang up a few days before we begin to make students aware of what to look out for, and then for one week we give a Health & Wellness tidbit on the morning announcements in order to show student’s that having a healthy lifestyle doesn’t always have to be so hard. Once we are done with that, we will (hopefully) start a YouTube channel. I’m not sure how far we would get with that because the class only lasts for the rest of the semester and the videos we would make could potentially require a lot of time. If administration lets us, we might also continue the tidbits on the announcements once every week or two.

We will maybe need feedback on whether the students/teachers found our announcements helpful or at least interesting and if anyone tried out our suggestions (and what their results were).

Wallet Workshop

I did not understand the purpose of this workshop project. I did not like it. I found it boring because it took three days to do it. I consider myself a creative person but I literally had no idea what to do for the workshop. The fact that it was centered around a wallet made me feel like I would have rather been watching Lawrence of Arabia in US History. I didn’t have any interest in the project and I actually tried which is funny because if it’d graded, I’ll probably get an F. I found it kind of difficult to put that much enthusiasm into something that I could not care less about. Sorry if this is pessimistic, I guess I just have a bad attitude.


The main focus on the ASL Awareness project Seth and I have been working on has been the school Snapchat account where we put up videos teaching students words or phrases in ASL. I think it’s been pretty successful snd we will continue it but I’m ready to move onto a new project I’m more passionate about. What interests me the most is nutrition. I really like knowing what is in the things I eat and paying attention to what is going into my body. I’ve recently become a pescatarian which hasn’t been as hard as I thought it would be. I basically just want to be able to educate people on the benefits of having different kinds of diets and the importance of reading the ingredient list before going crazy over the number of calories. I don’t know if I’ll be able to make a project out of this considering most high school students couldn’t care less about what is in what they’re eating, but we’ll see.

Marshmallow Challenge

Recently in my Innovations class we did the “Marshmallow Challenge.” We got into groups and each group got a piece of string, a strip of masking tape, a few spaghetti sticks, and one marshmallow. In 18 minutes, our group had to work together to figure out how to build a structure with the supplies given. The group with the tallest structure won. The purpose of the project was to promote team building, creativity, and innovative thinking. Relating that to the ASL project I am doing now, I think the purpose of our teacher having us do the challenge was to show us both that we have ideas that we don’t think of until we are put in a situation where we have to think fast, and that it’s okay to fail. It ties into everyone’s projects, as we all try and fail on our way to doing something great.


Seth and I created a Snapchat account for our school. Each day, we find one or two people to take a video of doing a sign and then caption it with directions on how to sign the word/phrase. We have a decent amount of “friends” on the account, one of which being a lady from California that Seth knows. We signed “cat” and “dog” one of the days and the lady sent us a video of her baby trying to sign “cat” which was really cool. We haven’t done much other than the Snapchat yet, but if we save enough of the clips we might make a compilation video near the end of the semester (or earlier) of all of them put together. I suggested having people send us Snapchats of their friends doing the sign of the day or sending a black screen giving us suggestions of what words/phrases they’d like to learn next. On Friday, we put on a Snapchat asking people to send us videos doing their favorite sign they learned over the weekend. I’m not sure how popular that was because Seth is currently the one logged into the account. I’m having fun with the Snapchat thing I think it was a really good idea. I look forward to seeing what an impact we can make and how much we can teach students as we continue on with this project.
